<image:caption>David W. McKee Architects began working with the Garden in 2011 when we designed and built a butterfly pavilion. This was a pro-bono project for us, and enjoyed working with Garden staff and volunteers. Money came from a few individual donors and the resulting structure has become a highlight for visitors of all ages.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Two buildings have been completed at this time and another three are in the design phase. One of the completed buildings is a good example of the overriding design principles that guide the design process. The “Heavy Metal Studio” is used for blacksmithing classes as well as metal fabrication. Simple fireproof walls of concrete block extend up 8ft. from the concrete floor. Above that, translucent panels allow abundant light deep into the workshop space. Tilt- up shop doors on both sides open up to provide much needed cross ventilation. Rainwater harvested from the roof provides water for both the shop needs and landscape irrigation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - 315 Mountain Street Exterior</image:title>
<image:caption>315 Mountain is a recent project that demonstrates the design principles as set forth in the NWA Design Excellence Program. This adaptive reuse structure is a makeover of a building that was originally constructed in 1957 as a tire store, then a restaurant, and finally a mixed use facility housing the Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation. The proximity of the building to the Fayetteville Public Library, Fire-station, downtown square, Dickson Street, and University campus facilities allows easy access whether pedestrian or vehicular. While serving primarily as an office for the foundation, gathering space is available for events that support the mission of the foundation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Rear Facade - Sunroom</image:title>
<image:caption>Fortunately the building which was in poor condition has “good bones” and the extensive modifications were primarily to the interior leaving the existing Mid-century Modern exterior intact. Interior design elements enhance the Mid-century/industrial aesthetic that was recognized early in the design process. Improvements to the mechanical and electrical systems include hydronic floor heating throughout, high efficiency HVAC systems, and LED lighting. A digital control system helps manage energy usage as well as security and communications. The overall insulation values of the building envelope were increased three-fold.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Crossover Garage</image:title>
<image:caption>A repeat client of our office has commissioned a new garage to house his collection of rare mid-century automobiles. The garage will have five bays deep enough for two cars each. Two will have recessed car lifts. The roof gently slopes up to to accommodate the required clearance for the lifts. We use the required roof height to create a dynamic form with cost-effective glazing for the clerestory, the garage design is elevated above a typical industrial building. On the far end, the garage will have a lounge and small bedroom loft overlooking it's agricultural surroundings in northeast Fayetteville.</image:caption>

      <image:title>315 MOUNTAIN - 315 Mountain Street Exterior</image:title>

      <image:title>315 MOUNTAIN - Rear Facade - Sunroom</image:title>
<image:caption>Fortunately the building which was in poor condition has “good bones” and the extensive modifications were primarily to the interior leaving the existing Mid-century Modern exterior intact. Interior design elements enhance the Mid-century/industrial aesthetic that was recognized early in the design process. Improvements to the mechanical and electrical systems include hydronic floor heating throughout, high efficiency HVAC systems, and LED lighting. A digital control system helps manage energy usage as well as security and communications. The overall insulation values of the building envelope were increased three-fold.</image:caption>
